Netflix launches free show on YouTube channel, American streaming service Netflix has taken penetration into India’s mass markets a step further by launching a free show for its YouTube channel. Titled The Brand New Show, it will be a new format combining talk show and sketch comedy. Previously, the only content, obviously for free, on the platform’s YouTube channel was its show and movie trailers.
The fortnightly entertainment episode will bring topical monologues, banterful conversation, hilarious skits, and put the spotlight on the country’s comedic elite and the biggest stars, the company said in a statement.
Every episode of the show that will be filmed in front of a live studio audience will be hosted by a new face. The show is being brought together by names like television actor Rytasha Rathore and web world faces Manik Papneja, Sainee Raj, and Aseem Chandaver. All of these will feature in sketches and live games, together with celebrity guests.
The first episode that will air on 31 October will be hosted by Instagram star Kusha Kapila, who also features in upcoming Netflix film Ghost Stories and will guest star the leading ladies of Bard Of Blood, Sobhita Dhulipala and Kirti Kulhari.
Netflix’s other mass outreach experiment in India includes a mobile-only subscription plan which it launched in the country at Rs. 199 a month this July, and from which it says it’s been getting good results. It is also looking to tell stories with an authentic local voice that can transcend geographical boundaries to reach global audiences. It has a bunch of original Indian films lined up, including Karan Johar’s Drive and Guilty, Ajay Devgn’s Tribhanga starring Kajol, horror anthology Ghost Stories, Dibakar Banerjee’s Freedom and Atul Sabharwal’s Class of ’83, produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.
